“B-PEP & ‘THE CAMPAIGN FOR POWER’ SEEKS ACTIVE COMMUNITY SUPPORT IN ITS EFFORTS FOR A GREAT VOTER TURNOUT ON NOV. 3RD”

The Black Political Empowerment Project (B-PEP) and the W. PA. CAMPAIGN FOR POWER are seeking help with B-PEP’s “Roll to the Polls” project, which being assisted by VEEEM, the Voter Empowerment Education Enrichment Movement. We are asking for help with two different but equally important roles, and for each volunteer to be ready to do both if possible.  As we are not yet sure the number of rides that will be requested and drivers who will be available, we want as much flexibility as possible to meet the needs on Election Day to provide free rides to anyone who needs it.  We are also asking for help with getting the word out about the availability of the rides to as many people as possible, as well as with phone-banking with our partners. Lastly, we are seeking donations to cover the costs of these important efforts.

1. Drive voters to the polls: This would be on November 3rd, prior to election day as some voters would like to drop off their ballots early downtown or at a satellite location on 10/24-25. Stephanie Carey is coordinating these efforts, and Amy Johnson is keeping the list of drivers. Interested persons should email them with your interest and availability: stephcarey98@gmail.com and AmyMJohnson412@gmail.com.

2. A coalition of many groups, including B-PEP, Common Cause, EMPower, The League of Women Voters, The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, ACLU, and the PA Election Protection Coalition are collaborating to protect the rights of voters in Pennsylvania. For those who would like to take part in the B-PEP Field Operations for non-partisan Election Protection poll monitors (150 needed), should see the links on the next page to register, choose a training and/or sign up for other activities.  More information is also in the attached flyer.

There are two primary roles available for election protection workers: poll monitor and rover:

Poll Monitor: Scrupulously non-partisan, stands outside polling locations with a Protect the Vote T-shirt, helps voters who are confused or have questions; watches out for, records, and reports problems from long lines to voter intimidation.

Rover: Also non-partisan, drives/bikes between polling locations to see what is going on, puts out Protect the Vote (PTV) yard signs, and reports problems.

3. Flyer distribution: One of the most important things supporters can do is to spread the word as far and widely as possible about the availability of rides. The effort will not succeed unless people know about it. And they can sign up now to vote on election day. So please share the attached flyer in as many places as possible.

4. B-PEP is also asking for donations from anyone who might be able to contribute. B-PEP is shouldering the costs of outreach and administrative support, along with things like PPE, food, staging areas, etc. Any amount is greatly appreciated: https://www.b-pep.net/donate

5. Volunteer to phonebank in conjunction with our partners at Campaign for Power:

Again, B-PEP is asking for volunteers to be ready to either drive or to provide election protection and to be prepared to do either. Amy Johnson is coordinating a driver list, and B-PEP will be in touch with election protection roles if additional people are needed and have been trained (it is a quick training). Please reach out to Celeste Taylor if you have any questions: taylor.celeste@gmail.com.  We need 150 volunteers ready to go.

B-PEP also has a few hundred new yard signs that must be distributed, as well as hundreds of B-PEP doorknockers, and other non-partisan information in its headquarters. People are urged to call 412-212-8775 or to email B-PEP at BPEP.Pittsburgh@gmail.com.

The assistance  of all interested persons, organizations and religious groups in these efforts is critically important, especially in a year when the stakes are so high, and voter participation is crucial. Everyone must be supported in exercising the right to vote. B-PEP is incredibly grateful for the willingness of those willing to go the extra mile for their fellow citizens in such a stressful time.
